North Atlantic
The Arctic and North Atlantic Expedition Cruising
As the expedition ships move north for the summer there are wonderful opportunities to explore the islands of the North Atlantic. You can join the ship in Oban on Scotland's west coast and voyage north, calling at some of the more remote islands of the Shetland archipelago and then circumnavigate Iceland. Alternatively you can sail to the Faroe Islands before crossing to Jan Mayen Island dominated by a 2,300 meter volcano. From here the ships continue to Spitsbergen from where you can fly home.
During your voyage you will be entertained by the ship's knowledgeable expeditions leaders whose subjects vary from the wildlife to the cultural heritage of the places you will be visiting and whose talks not only enrich the experience you take home but also entertain during the days at sea.
The delight of expedition cruising is that, using zodiacs (small rubber dinghies) it is possible to access remote corners or the equally remote places you are visiting. The Russian crew are skilled in landings and make the process very simple for the passengers. And, with only 50 of the latter, you soon get to know your travelling companions, giving an extra dimension to the whole holiday.
Information on all the places mentioned above (with the exception of Jan Mayen Island which you will find on the Spitsbergen page) is available under the British Isles or Europe section of this website.
