St Kilda & Rockall
A new expedition cruise itinerary
No sooner had our brochure hit the streets in August than we were told about a new departure for the Russian ships as they head north for Iceland and Spitsbergen after a couple of voyages around the Scottish Islands in May.
This really is quite something - a short break with a difference. You join the ship in Ullapool on Scotland's north-west coast (easily accessible by bus from Inverness) and sail to that most magical of all the Hebridean destinations, St Kilda where hopefully landing will be possible - and if anyone can achieve that it's our friends in Oceanwide whose experience and skill is second to none.
The next island is Rockall of Shipping Forecast fame. This great hunk of rock sticks out of the North Atlantic in stark and solitary splendour and is home to thousands of seabirds. Landing won't be possible, but I'll bet not many folk have photos of a shipping forecast area! (Did you hear that edition of Desert Island Discs when the guest chose a recording of that most traditional of all pieces of broadcasting as one of his eight records?)
The ship then continues to Iceland where you have the choice of flying back to the UK the same day, spending a little time in Reykjavik or staying on board for the ship's Around Iceland expedition.
Don't know about you, but the mere thought of all this makes me want to dash off for the suitcase! Give us a call if you would like more details on this or any of the expedition voyages in the Scottish Islands, North Atlantic or Arctic next summer.
