News from Peru

It's several months now since a powerful earthquake hit the coastal area of Peru south of the country's capital, Lima. As this area is included in our itinerary, we have, of course, been concerned about the impact it has had not only in terms of human suffering but, more mundanely, on the programme we have planned.

Andy Mitchell, one of Island Holidays Plus longest-standing tour leaders, was in Peru in September. He tells us that the Hotel Paracas (our base for a visit to the Ballesta islands) was completely destroyed but - and here's the good news - it should be rebuilt by March 2008. As our tour is not until September that gives plenty of time for the inevitable delays! The boat trips are still running and it would seem that the bird habitats have not been too badly affected, although some areas have been destroyed.

As the area struggles to recover from this terrible natural disaster, it is to be hoped that our continued support of their fragile tourism structure will help their recovery.
