A Very Special Book
“Bobby the Birdman” is a delightful volume which demonstrates the extraordinary gifts of this modest islander who captured so many hearts not only in Britain but wherever his travels took him.
It’s 30 years since the late Bobby Tulloch and I set up Island Holidays. Bobby was an extraordinary man in the real sense of the word. His multi-faceted talents reached an audience of friends and admirers throughout the UK and beyond. His death in 1996 came as a terrible shock to many – he was far too young. Today, a bunch of those who knew him well (this writer included) have come together thanks to the hard work and persistence of the editors, Jonathan Wills and Mike McDonnell and the result is this fabulous book which – of course (!) would make a brilliant Christmas present.
“Bobby the Birdman” (published by Birlinn, ISBN 978-1-78027-422-5, £20) is a delightful volume which demonstrates the extraordinary gifts of this modest islander who captured so many hearts not only in Britain but wherever his travels took him. In this beautifully illustrated book the reader enters the world of one of life’s original conservationists who came to fame when he discovered Snowy Owls breeding in Shetland, far from their native Arctic tundra. In his capacity as the RSPB for Shetland, a post he held for 21 years, Bobby set up all the necessary protection for the birds on the remote island of Fetlar and enabled hundreds of enthusiasts to enjoy the spectacle without disturbing the owls. A natural raconteur Bobby was a wonderful ambassador both for the RSPB and for his beloved Shetland Islands.
