New Governor for St Helena
There's a new face at Plantation House, the home of the Governor of St Helena. Or, to put it another way, a new caretaker of the 180-year-old giant tortoise, Jonathan, who lives there and has seen many such come and go. Andrew Gurr took up the appointment in November 2007, succeeding Michael Clancy who several Island Holidays Plus clients will remember for his warm hospitality.
At Island Holidays Plus the name Andrew Gurr is a familiar one as the gentleman was chief executive of Falkland Islands Government between 1994 and 1999. Indeed, we think he was present at the Reception which the Falkland Islands' Governor gave for our 10th birthday celebrations in 1998. Mr Gurr's book A Little Piece of England (available through us) is a marvellously entertaining record of his time on the islands and gives us a glimpse of a perceptive and able man with a wonderful sense of humour. It augurs well for St Helena at a critical time in the island's history with the coming of the airport - now delayed until at least 2012, and more likely 2015.
